A few years back I read a comment that we need a new "Mere Christianity" for the 21st Century. While never imagining myself as erudite as C. S. Lewis, I thought that I might be able to articulate contemporary Christian belief in a way accessible to the average lay person like me. I also thought that the same challenges that Lewis had addressed still remained, but had evolved with changing social mores, and that they could be addressed in new ways.

Particularly perplexing were the new challenges to Christian standards of family and sexual morality.

A comprehensive outline of Christian Faith was already available in the Nicene and Apostles Creeds. Although hundreds of years old they remained not only applicable to modern times, but relatively simple and straightforward. They became my outline for addressing current issues in the light of Christian Faith. Though not divinely inspired, the Creeds are a good distillation of what Christians believe based on divine revelation.

At the same time, I had a good friend who had stopped practicing his faith because of doubts. We had talked about it and I thought perhaps I could help him sort things out. I began composing a series of letters and found myself sorting out a lot of things for myself as well. As it turned out, my project took longer than anticipated and, by the time it was completed, my friend had already returned to the Faith. Naturally, I was delighted, but I decided to publish what I had been writing in hopes that someone else might benefit from it.
